Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup masoor dal
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 medium tomato finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies slit
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt as needed
  • 1 tablespoon oil or ghee
  • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice optional

Method
 

  1. Wash the masoor dal well.
  2. Add dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt to a pressure cooker.
  3. Pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles.
  4. Mash the cooked dal lightly.
  5. Heat oil or ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds.
  6. Add onion and green chilies. Cook until light golden.
  7. Add ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1 minute.
  8. Add tomato, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook until soft.
  9. Add cooked dal and mix well.
  10. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes.
  11. Add garam masala and coriander leaves.
  12. Add lemon juice if using and serve hot.

Notes

Cut the potatoes small so they cook evenly. Do not add too much water, as this is a dry sabzi. Stir gently to keep the cauliflower pieces from breaking.
